28 weeks... and my father got "the call"

28 weeks, 4 days

How far along: 28 weeks, 4 days

Size of Babies: Two large eggplants

Weight Gain: 35 lbs total

Baby Update: Babies can open and close their eyes, which now sport lashes. They continue to grow, grow, grow.

Symptoms: Nothing new to report this week

Movement: Sofia felt the babies move and said, "they are pushing my hands right off!" I feel the pitter patter of little feet on my bladder which makes me have to pee constantly.

Exercise: A lot of walking this week... and crying (more on that below).

Sleep: Restlessness

Food Cravings: Not much of an appetite this week- hence no weight gain.

28-week doctor appointment update: All is well! Babies are weighing in at approximately 3 lbs each. Baby Girl is now breech and Baby Boy is still horizontal- chances are a C-Section is in my future. Baby Girl's got some chubby cheeks and Baby Boy has some hair on his head. I'm measuring four weeks ahead of schedule (typical for a twin pregnancy) and my blood pressure is perfect.

Excited: My father has two beautiful NEW lungs... so, yes, I'm excited that God has answered our prayers and he has survived a major operation.

Details Below...(it's a bit lengthy... no way around it!)

This has been the most crazy/scary/emotional week of my life. My father, who has been battling Pulmonary Fibrosis for six years- and who has been on a lung transplant list at Mass General since May- received "the call" on Tuesday that they had lungs for him and to get to Boston ASAP. When my dad went on the transplant list this past May, he was ranked #12, after a short time, he was bumped to #7, and just last week, he moved up to #4 (his health was rapidly declining- hence the bump up the list). We were hopeful that this meant he would get "the call" any day now, but we were all still thinking that it was months away from becoming a reality.... how wrong we all were.

I was all dressed for work on Tuesday morning when I saw that I had a missed call from my mom at 7:15 am. "Hmm... that's odd"... I thought to myself, and having a suspicious feeling, I called my mom right back and my dad answered and said "we got the call!" "You're joking!" were the first words out of my mouth. "I'm not joking," dad said..."we got the call!" "I'm coming with you," I said... and that was that. My dad, being "the horse to the stable," as many of you Chalmers relatives can relate, wanted to get right to the hospital ASAP- and taking a detour to pick me up at my house in Gray, was not settling with him and he tried to give me the heave-ho... well, you don't cross an extremely pregnant woman- as he soon realized! I told him I was coming with him and that I would meet him right on 302 and jump in his car, and that was that. There was no way, I was getting the heave-ho. He agreed. Thank God... they needed me there.

We were all nervous wrecks as we drove down to Boston, and when my dad started giving me work orders (as if he would not be returning to work) I started to really panic- internally (of course I was "strong" on the outside). We got to MGH, dad was admitted, and immediately they started prepping him for surgery (shaved him right down- chest and arms). We found out that the lungs were not in the building- the surgeon was on a flight (to Ohio- we found out later) to harvest the lungs from the donor and fly them back to Boston. There was still a slim chance that the lungs wouldn't be viable and that the surgery wouldn't happen- but they prepped him anyway.

I think the hardest part of the whole experience was 1. saying goodbye to my dad on his way into the Operating Room 2. the long 8-hr wait to find out how the surgery went. Many tears were shed by my mom and I as we had to say our goodbyes to my dad- we weren't expecting to leave him so soon as we knew the donor lungs were still not in the building- but the surgical team had more prepping to do and we couldn't go beyond the OR doors. Damn rules. We left our dad around 1:30 pm. We found out that he didn't go under anesthesia until 4 pm and that it would be a 7-8 hour surgery. The wait was pure torture. I'll never forget the inside of the Gray Surgical Family Waiting Area. It was packed full of families, all waiting for positive outcomes regarding their loved ones. Thank God Adam met me, to wait it out with my mom and I, as did my brother, Nick. My poor sister, Marney, was in India on a two-week work trip and was frantically trying to book a ticket home- it would take her two days.

We didn't get any updates at all (WTF, seriously?!) from the surgical team until AFTER the surgery- well, that wasn't until 11:30 pm. The surgeon found us and told us that the surgery was a success- the new lungs were taking- the old lungs were in very bad shape- and that it would still be another hour or so before we got to see our dad. Around 1 am, we finally got to see him in the ICU- of course he was still under anesthesia, but at least we got to see his face. The next 24-hours were critical. My mom gave the nurse strict instructions to call us as soon as he started to stir. We went to the hotel to get some sleep and at 6 am the nurse called to say he was responding to commands and that he gave the nurse the "thumbs up" sign. What relief! My mom rushed to the hospital- we followed shortly after- and my father used hand signals to say "I love you" to my mom. As soon as I saw my dad, I burst into tears. I couldn't keep it bottled in any more. It was a mix of relief, exhaustion, gratefulness, and raw emotion.... ok... pregnancy hormones too. My dad signed to me, "I love your bump..." and the tears kept streaming down my face...but they were happy tears.

Seeing my dad in an ICU room, with a million tubes and hooked up on a ventilator, is quite a scary site... one that will forever be permeated in my brain... but he was alive... and that's all that mattered. God truly did answer our prayers and we are so lucky, grateful, and blessed.

The road to recovery will be a long one for my dad- but he's under great care at MGH- and he's making tremendous progress every day. He was taken off the ventilator after two days and moved out of ICU after three days. It's now five days post-op and he's breathing without any oxygen- amazing. I left my dad on Thursday, to return to Maine for my OB appointment on Friday, but returned on Saturday to Boston with Adam and Sofia. Marney arrived on Thursday morning and is staying with my mom all this week. Amongst the craziness- we had some time to do something fun with Sofia this weekend- we took her to the aquarium... although, her favorite part of the day was running through the fountains in the park in her diaper.

Mom: I know you are reading this post right now and I want to say to you- you are so strong and amazing. Dad's a lucky man and we are lucky children. Don't forget to take care of YOU... and I will do what I can to also be by your side as often as I can during these next few months as you reside in Boston with dad. Don't forget the hymn in church this morning, "God, when I called for you... you answered..."... he certainly did answer all of our prayers, and we are so lucky and blessed. I love you.

To my siblings and husband: I wouldn't want to go through this ordeal with any one else- as dad said in ICU- "when you're life is on the line... you don't think about your professional accomplishments, your last business transaction, or anything else... you think about your family- as that's what matters most."... I'm glad you're my family.

To my Cutter Family and extended family and friends: Thank you for all your love and support this week. You have no idea how much I have appreciated your phone calls, text messages, FB comments, etc. The outpouring from family, friends, and the community has been nothing short of amazing. I wont forget your kindness. Thank you, thank you, thank you- from the bottom of my heart.

Last but not least- to my dad, my hero: I am so relieved and grateful that you received your new lungs and are on the road to recovery... thank you for being so strong and for not giving up the fight. God knew that it wasn't your time to go.... and I hope these lungs give you many more years of life and good health... after all... you need to meet your new grandchildren and they need to meet their Papa. I love you.

xoxoxo,
Your Dorothy Marie...

And now... to lighten the mood... here are some photos from the week- just to prove that amidst the tears, there were some smiles this week....

Thank you Michael, Paula, and Aaron!
What a great present to come home to!

I promise that next week will be a shorter blog post.

Have a good night and God Bless!

27 weeks.

I think there's a basketball in there...
better yet... a whole team of players!

How far along: 27 weeks, 4 days

Size of Babies: Head of cauliflower

Baby Update: Babies are roughly 2 1/2 lbs and 14 1/2 inches from head to toe. Babies are sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing eyes, and even sucking their fingers. Babies' brains are now very active. Let's hope they're wicked smart so they get college scholarships!

Weight Gain: Roughly 35 lbs total- I'll know for sure this Friday when I go to the doctors.

Symptoms: Getting more and more tired and still nesting big time. Thanks to Nina for helping me organize the closet in the nursery today and for another bin of clothes. Still hitting the bathroom at least 1-2 times at night and my feet are a little swollen. This heat is killing me! I feel like I sweat all the time- even in air conditioning.

Movement: Good Lord- these babies are active.... especially at night when I'm resting or attempting to rest.

Exercise: Did some walking at the Yarmouth Clam Festival- does that count? Also helped with some gardening work today- weeding is hard work!

Sleep: Same as usual- hasn't gotten any worse, hasn't gotten any better.

Food Cravings: Anything COLD.... ice cream and frappes especially!

Food Aversions: Still not diggin' mushrooms these days.

Excited: .......aaaaaannnnd we bought a mini-van! Yep- a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country to be exact. Buh-bye Grand Jeep Cherokee (and my hip image)... hello soccer mom! I kid... but... actually, I'm really loving my new ride. It's so practical and has all the bells and whistles- leather interior, drop down DVD player, Stow n' Go storage. I got it on Friday and on Saturday we took it on a lengthy trip and it was great. Sofia seemed very comfortable. Adam calls it "our mobile living room"... and he's kind of right. It will definitely fit our needs for a growing family of five.

We went to the Yarmouth Clam Festival on Wednesday night with my two cousins, Anne and Jim, and their families. It was "bracelet night".... so you pay $20.00 for a bracelet and the kids can go on as many rides as they want. Adam and Sofia both purchased the bracelets and I very contently watched them go on all sorts of rides. Suffice to say, Sofia slept very well that night... as did Adam.

Yesterday we drove to Chester, NH to attend the housewarming of my very dear friend, Meghan (Connolly) Fredette. What a beautiful house she and Charlie have purchased- my favorite items being the central air (of course the pregnant lady would say that) and the humongous walk-in closet off their master bedroom. It's seriously a huge room with tons of shelving space and the ironic part is that Meg and Charlie could care less about clothes! It's almost not even right that they have a closet that big! Can you tell I'm jealous? They had a blow-up kiddie pool for the kids (which Sofia loved), a Slip n' Slide, sidewalk chalk, bubbles.... they thought of everything. We had a great time. Meg and Charlie are as OCD as me (God love them for it) and their house was pristine, organized, and clutter free.... how does the saying go.... "cleanliness is next to Godliness"...

Other news: My 28 week Dr's appointment is this Friday- I'll get to spy on the babies some more and find out what positions they are in as well as get a weight check on them. Starting this week I'll be going to the Dr's every two weeks, until I hit 32 weeks, and then I'll be going twice weekly until delivery day! Basically, I will be living at the doctor's office. As long as there's central air... I wont complain. This heat is redonkulous... (that's my new word of choice.)

Some photos from the week...

26 weeks.

26 weeks, 4 days...
and I look terrible in this photo sans makeup!
How far along: 26 weeks, 4 days

Size of babies: Scallions

Baby Update: Babies are 14 inches from head to heel and about 2 lbs in weight. They can hear the sound of my voice and the voices of people I talk to. Babies are inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for lung development.

Weight Gain: Not quite sure- I've been avoiding the scale this week!

Symptoms: Well, the swelling has started- with this heat, it was bound to happen at some point.... I was just hoping it would start later. The swelling is mainly in my fingers and feet- most of my sandals leave indentations on my feet... looks like it's time to start wearing flip flops to work! I've been getting more tired and irritable- especially in this heat. On the plus side... I do NOT have Gestational Diabetes! Yahoo! I passed the 3-hr Glucose test and was SO relieved to get the call from the Doctor earlier this week.

Movement: Pretty soon my belly button is going to go from an "innie" to an "outie." I can start to feel major body parts now- wish I could see what positions the babies are in now, although, I'm pretty sure that Baby Boy is still transverse.

Exercise: Yes! I actually walked 4 times this week in my neighborhood with Adam and Sofia in the evening. I logged about 4 miles total.

Sleep: I broke a new record and got up 3 times to pee the night before last- on average it's more like 1-2 times per night.Other than that- I sleep pretty well with the body pillow and the AC on full blast.

Food Cravings: In today's 85 degree heat, I had a sudden craving for a McDonald's Chocolate Chip Frappe today- Adam and Sofia were in the car with me and Adam was on a hunt to find the closest McDonald's in the Scarborough area (as that's where we were at the time of the craving) and wouldn't you know that the darn McD's was closed! Fortunately there was a Wendy's right down the road so I had a Frosty instead... crisis averted.

Food Aversions: Mushrooms

Happy Anniversary Adam! Adam and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary on Thursday, 7/11. My mom took Sofia for an overnight so we could have a proper date night. We had dinner at Walters in Portland and had a great time. Adam surprised me with a new Pandora charm- the "He Loves Me" charm which is a flower, and apparently flowers are the symbol representing the 4th wedding anniversary (I did not know this). After dinner we had some homemade Gelato (reminiscent of our Italian honeymoon) and then went home and watched our wedding video (which is what we do on every anniversary- I got the idea from my cousin, Anne.) I can't believe it's been four years already- but look at all we've accomplished!

Nesting... it's not just for the birds... I'm in major nesting mode right now. I can't seem to sit still. For example, today, after we went to a brunch with friends and then hit the beach, I cleaned my entire car- vacuumed, dusted the dashboard, washed the windows, etc. Then I proceeded to vacuum the garage! There were so many dead bugs and cobwebs in our garage windows that I was totally repulsed and vacuumed them right up with the shop vac and then proceeded to vacuum the garage floor- I mean... who does that?! I also went through 6 bins of baby clothes and unpacked all the 0-3 and 3-6 month girl clothes. This little girl is all set- little boy, however, I hope you like wearing pink... haha... 'cause I have barely any boy clothes.

NYC = not so much. I was supposed to fly to NYC this weekend to attend my college friend's bridal shower but I decided that flying at this stage in the game just isn't worth the risk- especially flying solo without Adam. So I cancelled my flight and I was able to get fully refunded since it was for medical reasons. I got a Dr's note and submitted to Delta and they are refunding me in full (for what was originally a non-refundable ticket).

Fitts and Cutters....We attended a brunch today with another set of identical twins- whom Adam and Aaron went to college with and were quite close to- Kristen and Heather Fitts. My-oh-my, those two girls are hard to tell apart... and when they hold each other's kids, I get even more confused! Photos below and you'll see what I mean...

25 weeks.

25 weeks, 4 days

How far along: 25 weeks, 4 days

Size of babies: Rutabagas

Baby Update: Babies are beginning to exchange their long, lean look for some baby fat. They are growing more hair- and if you could see it, you'd now be able to discern its color and texture.

Weight gain: +2 for a total of 32 lbs (I blame this heat- I'm starting to swell)

Symptoms: Braxton Hicks contractions- they mainly occur in the evenings- my belly gets as tight as a drum. Swelling of the hands- bye bye to my wedding band and engagement ring- see you post-delivery! My fingers look like fat little sausages- so not attractive. I'm also getting very tired these days- in fact, I could use a daily nap.

Movement: Hell yes! Nina felt the babies move today- I think it was Baby Boy who did all the kicking. As they are getting bigger, I'm feeling major body parts (bums and heads). My belly changes shapes as they move and it's so crazy to see it contort on its own.

Exercise: I successfully walked in the 4 on the 4th Road Race in Bridgton on July 4th! I must say I was quite proud of myself as it was a very hot day- but luckily, we stuck to the shade as best we could and I carried a water bottle with me so I was hydrated. My mom and I completed the race in 1 hr and 15 mins... not a fast pace by any means, but I'm just glad I completed it! I felt like a celebrity as the bump was proudly on display and I got a lot of cheers from well-wishers.

Sleep: I'm sleeping 8 to 10 hours on average.... still getting up for the bathroom breaks. Thank goodness for AC as I have it blasting every night- which pretty much freezes Adam, especially since the AC faces his side of the bed.

Food Cravings: Fresh strawberries with whipped cream

Appointment Update: Well, unfortunately I did NOT pass my glucose 1-hr test last week so I had to go back on Friday for the 3-hr test which required 12 hours of fasting and 3-hours of monitoring at the doctor's office along with 4 blood draws every hour. This time they made me drink an even sweeter version of that orange drink containing 100 grams of sugar instead of 50 grams. Ick. Needless to say, without any food in my stomach, and a jolt of sugar to the system, the babies were doing gymnastics in my belly. I downloaded a movie on my iPad and watched it while I waited which made the time go by relatively quickly. A big thanks to Aaron and Nina for watching Sofia for me. I should find out the results tomorrow and if I flunk this test then I will officially have Gestational Diabetes (boo!) and will probably be put on some kind of restrictive diet (think: counting carbs and grams of sugar... ugh!)

God Bless America.... land that I love... Well, I had a great 4th of July with family and friends. It was nice to have 5 days off as well. The weather was beautiful (although very hot and humid) but it made for some fun boating and swimming. Sofia has become a little fish- amazing the confidence that two days of swimming lessons gives a toddler. She's blowing bubbles, putting her face in the water, kicking her legs, and she even put her whole head underwater a few times. She wanted to be in the water all day every day.
We spent time in Bridgton and Auburn with both sides of the family and relaxed and enjoyed ourselves... and ate some lobster too!

Other News: The nursery is pretty much done! Baby Boy's crib bedding arrived (thank you Marney for placing the order with PBK and allowing me your wonderful discount). I just need to get the closet organized and go through piles of baby clothes but other than that- I'm pretty happy with the results. I did register online at Babies R' Us for my baby shower (August 3rd)... but I didn't register for very many things since the items that I need are pretty pricey. Definitely in need of some boy clothes and I will welcome any and all hand-me-downs!
